Historical visit for Monaco

25/03/2019
On a historical day  Monaco,  welcomed a Chinese president for the first time on Sunday. President Xi Jinping visited the Principality to meet Prince Albert, as part of his European tour, having already  met the Italian president, with whom he concluded a historic partnership of 27 agreements involving Italy on the Silk Road, and will meet the French president.

The President Xi Jinping and HSH Prince Albert met last September during a 4-day trip by the Prince to Beijing (which enabled Monaco Telecom to sign an agreement with Huawei to make the Principality the first country fully covered by 5G.)

This time, the two leaders were able to exchange views on political, economic and social science issues, but mainly on environmental protection which is a cause dear to HSH Prince Albert.

As no press briefing was planned, Mr Wang, Chinese Vice President, had already said -a few days before the visit - that he hoped that it would "give new impetus to pragmatic cooperation between China and the three countries, to relations between China and the EU in this new era and new open  spaces for the joint construction of the belt and the road project. »

While China and Monaco are certainly friends, they are far from being major partners, with a trade volume of 130 million euros last year; this visit nevertheless marks a diplomatic success for His Serene Highness Prince Albert.
